Retail Isn't Just a Stepping Stone. The Data Tells a Different Story.
If you ask someone to picture a retail worker, chances are they'll imagine a student earning some extra money or someone looking for a temporary job until something "better" comes along.
It's a perception that's been around for years.
The problem is, it doesn't reflect reality.
When we surveyed almost 400 people across New Zealand about their experiences in retail, one statistic stood out immediately.
63% of respondents had more than four years' experience working in retail.
That tells a very different story.
Retail isn't an industry made up entirely of short-term workers. It's built on experienced people who have developed valuable skills, built successful careers, and continue to choose retail because they genuinely enjoy the work.
Experience is the backbone of retail
Walk into any great retail store and you'll usually find experienced people behind the scenes.
They're the team members who know their products inside out.
The supervisors who can calm a difficult customer while supporting a new team member at the same time.
The assistant managers who understand how to keep a store running smoothly during the busiest trading periods.
The store managers who lead teams, coach people, manage budgets, analyse sales performance, and create great customer experiences every single day.
None of that happens overnight.
It comes from years of learning, adapting, solving problems, and developing people skills that are valuable in almost every workplace.
Retail is often described as "unskilled" work. Anyone who has worked in retail knows that's simply not true.
Retail develops skills that last a lifetime
Every shift in retail builds capability:
You learn how to communicate with people from all walks of life.
You learn how to stay calm under pressure.
You learn how to prioritise when everything feels urgent.
You develop resilience, teamwork, commercial awareness, problem-solving skills, and the confidence to make decisions.
These aren't just retail skills. They're career skills.
It's no surprise that so many successful business leaders started on the shop floor. Retail provides a foundation that prepares people for leadership, regardless of where their career eventually takes them.
So why does the perception still exist?
Part of the answer is that retail is often many people's first job.
Because so many young people begin their working lives in retail, the industry has unfairly become labelled as temporary.
But a first job doesn't mean a dead-end job.
For many people, retail becomes a career because they enjoy working with customers, thrive in team environments, and find satisfaction in helping people every day.
Others discover opportunities they never expected, progressing into leadership, buying, merchandising, marketing, HR, operations, supply chain, learning and development, and head office roles.
Retail opens more doors than many people realise.
Workplaces have room to be better
One of the strongest themes from our research was that people genuinely enjoy working in retail:
They value the customer interaction.
They enjoy being part of a team.
They like the variety that every day brings.
What frustrates people isn't retail itself but it’s:
Inconsistent employment experiences.
Poor communication.
Limited progression.
Feeling undervalued.
Lack of respect.
Retail doesn't have a perception problem because of the work. It has a perception problem because too many people have experienced workplaces that haven't brought out the best in the industry.
That's an important distinction.
Because when employers invest in good leadership, clear communication, development, and supportive workplace cultures, people stay.
Changing the conversation
At My Retail Career, we believe retail deserves greater recognition as a skilled and rewarding profession.
We also believe experienced retail workers deserve more credit than they often receive.
Behind every successful store is a team of capable people who have built their knowledge through years of experience:
They solve problems.
They lead people.
They build customer relationships.
They contribute to the success of the businesses they work for every single day.
Those skills deserve to be recognised.
Looking ahead
Retail has never been "just a job."
For some people, it's the beginning of their career. For others, it's where they build a career they genuinely love.
Regardless, the data clearly shows there are thousands of experienced retail professionals across New Zealand who continue to choose this industry.
It's time the conversation caught up with the reality.
Because when we recognise the value of retail experience, we help raise the standard of the industry for everyone.
